UN Number

The UN Number is a four-digit number to identify substances or objects in accordance to the UN Recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods. An UN Number is assigned to each hazardous material in the dangerous goods lists of the regulations of all modes of transport.
Examples of UN Numbers:

  • 0004 AMMONIUM PICRATE
  • 0312 CARTRIDGES, SIGNAL
  • 2465 DICHLOROISOCYANURIC ACID SALTS
  • 3077 ENVIRONMENTALLY HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE, SOLID, N.O.S.

ID Number

The terms ID Number or substance number include additional numbers that are not regular UN Numbers. They have been introduced for identification of certain substances or objects by transport regulations. ICAO includes ID Numbers from 8000 and greater. ADN includes substance numbers from 9000 and greater.

The UN Number is indicated at the bottom of the orange warning sign. At the top there is the hazard identification number (HIN).
